Cars become an important extension of ourselves because we rely on them so much. So, when it comes time to retire an older vehicle, or one that has been with us at a significant point in our lives, it can be difficult to decide to move on to a new vehicle.
For many families, the question is about finances. At what point does it become more economical to purchase a new car than to maintain the old one?
But for others, the car may have a higher value than just its monetary worth. If you’ve wanted to replace your car to Used BMW X5 in New York, but it holds sentimental value for you, it may be easier to part with if you donate it to a charity or cause you admire rather than simply selling it. Donated cars can be used by the organization’s staff for cause-related activities, or the car can be sold and the money used to further the charity’s mission.
Once you’ve evaluated how attached you are to your car, you need to weigh the signs that tell you to search the classifieds for a new ride.
The biggest hint you might need a new car is serious or reoccurring mechanical problems. Do some cost comparisons? If you’re spending more on repairs than you would for payments on a new car, or even about the same amount, it makes sense to buy a newer car so that you can save money. You also need to consider that car repairs often expose new problems that need to be addressed.
Before you make a decision one way or the other, you might get the opinion of a mechanic you trust and ask him or her about the foreseeable repairs you can expect and how much each repair will add to the lifespan of your vehicle. This can also help you project future costs. Even if money is not a factor, having to take the car in to the mechanic so frequently is an unnecessary nuisance. Remember that reliability is a value of your car that you can’t assign a dollar amount to. If you regularly drive long hours for family or work responsibilities, or if you often carry children as passengers in your car, then the argument for getting a new car becomes even stronger.
If you’ve recently moved to a city that has a different climate than the one you bought your car in, you may quickly find that your automobile isn’t suited to its new home. For example, four-wheel-drive owners in the flat state of Florida probably don’t need the extra power, and will find that repairs are needlessly expensive. Likewise, bringing your convertible to a seasonal and wet climate like Seattle’s will find you with the top up during most months of the year. Not being able to find affordable repairs for your kind of car, and not being able to use the car as it is meant to be used are good signs that you should sell.
When you have a car over many years, you may find that the way you use the car changes over time. If you bought a pickup truck as a new homeowner and mainly drove it for trips on the weekends, when you did repairs around the house and gardening for your family, you may find that it more than served its purpose then, but that same car won’t be as big of a help when you take an office job in an urban area and need to fit the vehicle into compact parking spaces.
Alternatively, you could have a two-door coupe that worked great for you and your partner when you first got together. However, what if you start a family and need to position an infant’s seat in the back? A van or SUV is the traditional—and logical—choice for new parents. Both of these scenarios offer clear signs that your car isn’t right for your current situation.
